The Revelation of Saint John the Divine
The King James Bible
Revelation 22:6-21 Jesus is coming 6And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. 7Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book. 8And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. 10And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. 11He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. 12And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. 13I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. 14Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie. 16I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. 17And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. 18For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 20He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. 21The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. |
Margin notes: "These sayings are faithful and true." (22:6) - This is affirmation that we can trust God's word. Read Revelation 21:5 for another affirmation. "The things which must shortly be done." (22:6) - "The things which will soon happen." "I come quickly." (22:7) - One. "Blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book." (22:7) - This is the sixth of seven "beatitudes" found in Revelation. The other six can be found in 1:3; 14:13; 16:15; 19:9; 20:6; and 22:14. "I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things." (22:8) - John tried to worship the angel as he did in verse 19:10, and like before, he is rebuked (22:9). "Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book." (22:10) - Daniel was told not to reveal the prophesies in The Book of Daniel (Daniel 8:26) until "the time of the end" (12:4). God's message to Daniel wasn't meant for the people of that time. Unlike Daniel, John is told not to "seal" up the book of Revelations. Its message is meant for all people in all generations. "I come quickly." (22:12) - Two. "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end." (22:13) - Jesus is reinforcing this from verses 1:17 and 1:8. "Blessed are they that do his commandments." (22:14) - The last of the seven "beatitudes" found in Revelation. "They may have right to the tree of life." (22:14) - "That they will have a right to the tree of life." Adam and Eve lost the right to the tree of life when they disobeyed God (Genesis 3:22-24). But that right will someday be restored to believers. "For without." (22:15) - "For outside (of New Jerusalem)." "I am the root and the offspring of David." (22:16) - To help people recognize the Messiah, it was prophesied that He would be a descendant of King David, the son of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1; 11:10). Jesus fulfilled that prophesy. But how could the Messiah also be the "root" of David if He was born after him? Since Jesus existed before the world was created He is the "root" of David and became his "offspring" when He was born a man. See Matthew 1:1-17 to review Jesus' family tree. "The Spirit and the bride say, Come." (22:17) - "The Holy Spirit and the church say, come." "If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book." (22:18) - God is always consistent. This warning is similar to those found in Deuteronomy 4:2; 12:32; Proverbs 30:5-6 and Galatians 1:6-7. "God shall take away his part out of the book of life." (22:19) - "God will take away his share from the tree of life." Just as God told Moses thirty-four hundred years ago (Exodus 32:33). "I come quickly." (22:20) - Three. This is the third time in this short passage that Jesus warns mankind to be prepared for His return. Jesus' first recorded warning came in Matthew 16:27. |
New Living Translation
Revelation 22:6-21
6 Then the angel said to me, "Everything you have heard and seen is trustworthy and true. The Lord God, who inspires his prophets, has sent his angel to tell his servants what will happen soon."
Jesus Is Coming
7 "Look, I am coming soon! Blessed are those who obey the words of prophecy written in this book."
8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw all these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me. 9 But he said, "No, don't worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers the prophets, as well as all who obey what is written in this book. Worship only God!"
10 Then he instructed me, "Do not seal up the prophetic words in this book, for the time is near. 11 Let the one who is doing harm continue to do harm; let the one who is vile continue to be vile; let the one who is righteous continue to live righteously; let the one who is holy continue to be holy."
12 "Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End."
14 Blessed are those who wash their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life. 15 Outside the city are the dogs-the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie.
16 "I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star."
17 The Spirit and the bride say, "Come." Let anyone who hears this say, "Come." Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life. 18 And I solemnly declare to everyone who hears the words of prophecy written in this book: If anyone adds anything to what is written here, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone removes any of the words from this book of prophecy, God will remove that person's share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book.
20 He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon!"
Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
21 May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's holy people.

Application thought for the day:
Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
We can not earn, buy, trick, or fast talk our way into heaven.
We can not gain eternal life by being nice, helping others, or trying to obey the old Mosaic Law.
Salvation is a gift from God that we except when we place our faith in Christ the Messiah.

The last lesson of Revelation and the New Testament.
Revelation is an important part of the Bible, it carries the promise that good will win out over evil and teaches us that a heavenly reward awaits those who remain faithful. Revelation beautifully and convincingly speaks of the power and majesty of God. Revelation tells us that although Jesus Christ left earth as a sacrificial lamb, He will return a victorious lion.
Without getting caught up trying to precisely interpret each vision, go back and re-read Revelation. More of its hidden meanings will open up to you as God sees fit. Plan on reading Revelation again and again as you grow in Christ.
"Jesus, who is the Spirit of prophecy, has given his churches this morning-light of prophecy, to assure them of the light of the perfect day approaching. All is confirmed by an open and general invitation to mankind, to come and partake freely of the promises and of the privileges of the gospel. The Spirit, by the sacred word, and by convictions and influence in the sinner's conscience, says, Come to Christ for salvation; and the bride, or the whole church, on earth and in heaven, says, Come and share our happiness." (From Matthew Henry's (1662 - 1714) Concise Commentary on the Bible)
