The capital of Syria (Isaiah 7:8) located 133 miles north of Jerusalem. First mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 14:15,
Damascus is believed to have been founded in 2000 BC, making it the oldest city in the world. Around 750 BC, Damascus was destroyed, and its citizens were carried off to Assyria (Amos 1:5). Years later, the city was rebuilt. In Paul's day, Damascus was a Roman city and an important business center that sat on a major trade route. It was while on a trip to Damascus that Paul was converted by Christ (Acts 9:1-18).
Tarsus -
Paul's birthplace (Acts 9:11; 21:39; 22:3), Tarsus, was a small but important city located twelve miles north of the Mediterranean Sea on the banks of the Cydnus River in Cilicia (modern-day Turkey). Tarsus was a wealthy commercial center that sat on the trade route from Syria to Asia Minor and was famous for its schools of philosophy.
