John 5:30-47
Testimonies to Jesus 30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. 31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true. 32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true. 33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth. 34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved. 35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. 36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me. 37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. 38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. 39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. 41 I receive not honour from men.test 42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. 43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. 44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. 46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? |
Margin notes:
"I can of mine own self do nothing." (5:30) - Everything Jesus does is according to the will of God. Jesus is repeating this vital message from verse 5:19 (lesson 174). "I seek not mine own will." (5:30) - Jesus is reemphasizing that He came to earth to fulfill the will of God. This message is vital to understanding His mission, so Jesus is repeating it from John 4:34. He will reinforce it again in verse 6:38. As we will see in verse 17:4, Jesus will see His mission through to completion. "If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true." (5:31) - According to Mosaic Law, anyone testifying on their own behalf is suspect (John 8:13). Two or more witnesses were required to settle an issue as fact (Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15). Fortunately, there are many witnesses to Jesus' divinity. Listed in this passage alone are John the Baptist (5:32-35), all the Old Testament prophets (5:39-40), and God Himself (5:37-38). Even Jesus' miracles (5:36) act as a testimony to His divinity. "There is another that beareth witness." (5:32) - The witness is John the Baptist. "Ye sent unto John." (5:33) - "You went to John (the Baptist)." "Ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light." (5:35) - "You were willing for a while to rejoice in his message." "I have greater witness than that of John." (5:36) - Jesus is referring to God (John 8:18; 1 John 5:9), an even greater witness than John the Baptist. "The Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me." (5:37) - God bore witness that Jesus was His son (Matthew 3:17; Mark 1:11; Luke 3:22). "Nor seen his shape." (5:37) - Not even Moses, even when God gave him the Ten Commandments, saw God (Deuteronomy 4:12). "Abiding in you." (5:38) - "Living in you." "I receive not honour from men." (5:41) - "I don't want praise from men." "Moses...wrote of me." (5:46) - Moses prophesized the coming Messiah in Deuteronomy 18:15, and 18:18. Jesus was also prophesized in Genesis 49:10, Number 24:17, and in many other passages in the Old Testament. "His writings." (5:47) - Moses' writings are called the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament. |
