In this lesson:
Christ has risen! Please note: Some Bible scholars feel that Mark did not write the last twelve verses of chapter 16, therefore they are not the inspired word of God. However, a majority of scholars believe they were written by Mark, and thus authoritative. Why the confusion? The last page of Mark's Gospel was lost, and then found. While the earliest manuscripts did not include verses 16:9-20, the manuscripts made after the page was recovered include these twelve verses. Study Tip: When you come across a critical verse write it down, memorize it, and ponder its meaning. |

Mark 16:1-20
Jesus rises from the dead 1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. 2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. 3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? 4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. 5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. 6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. 7 But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. 8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid. Some ancient Greek manuscripts don't include verses 16:9-20. 9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. 10 And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not. 12 After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. 13 And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them. 14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. 15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. 19 So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. 20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. |
Margin notes:
"Anoint him." (16:1) - In keeping with Jewish tradition, Jesus was buried before the start of the Jewish Sabbath. His quick burial meant there was no time to suitably anoint His body. The three women arrived on Sunday morning, after the Sabbath, to properly anoint Jesus. "The first day of the week." (16:2) - It is now early Sunday morning. "The stone was rolled away." (16:4) - Not so Jesus could get out of the tomb, but so witnesses could get in and see it empty. "A young man." (16:5) - An angel (Matthew 28:2-3). "He is risen." (16:6) - Jesus Christ was dead and then resurrected. He will live forever and holds "the keys of hell and of death" (Revelation 1:18). "He goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you." (16:7) - Before He died, Jesus told His disciples that He would be resurrected and that they should meet Him in Galilee (Matthew 26:32; 14:28). But when Jesus was crucified the disciples were afraid to leave their hiding places (John 20:19), so Jesus met them in Jerusalem first (Luke 24:33-53), and in Galilee later (John 21:1-7). "Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils." (16:9) - Luke 8:2. "He appeared in another form unto two of them." (16:12) - The two were Cleopas and a second traveler on their way to Emmaus, a small village seven and a half miles west of Jerusalem (Luke 24:13-31). "They went and told it unto the residue." (16:13) - "They went and told the others." "He appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat." (16:14) - "He appeared to the eleven disciples (minus Judas) as they ate." "Upbraided them with their unbelief." (16:14) - "Rebuked them for their disbelief." "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel." (16:15) - This is called "the Great Commission." "They shall take up serpents." (16:18) - "They will pick up snakes." "Confirming the word with signs." (16:20) - Jesus confirmed the validity of the message the apostles taught by giving them the ability to perform signs (miracles). It was hard for sceptics to discredit the apostles after they witnessed a miracle. Click here to see a complete list of the apostles miracles. |

New Living Translation
Mark: 16:1-20
The Resurrection
1 Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus' body.
2 Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb.
3 On the way they were asking each other, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?"
4 But as they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled aside.
5 When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked,
6 but the angel said, "Don't be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn't here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body.
7 Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died."
8 The women fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered, and they said nothing to anyone because they were too frightened.
[Shorter Ending of Mark]
Then they briefly reported all this to Peter and his companions. Afterward Jesus himself sent them out from east to west with the sacred and unfailing message of salvation that gives eternal life. Amen.
[Longer Ending of Mark]
9 After Jesus rose from the dead early on Sunday morning, the first person who saw him was Mary Magdalene, the woman from whom he had cast out seven demons.
10 She went to the disciples, who were grieving and weeping, and told them what had happened.
11 But when she told them that Jesus was alive and she had seen him, they didn't believe her.
12 Afterward he appeared in a different form to two of his followers who were walking from Jerusalem into the country.
13 They rushed back to tell the others, but no one believed them.
14 Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead.
15 And then he told them, "Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.
16 Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.
17 These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages.
18 They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won't hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed."
19 When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God's right hand.
20 And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the Lord worked through them, confirming what they said by many miraculous signs.

Application thought for the day:
He is risen!
If not for the resurrection, we would still be wallowing in our sins. What does the resurrection mean to you?
This is the final lesson on the "Gospel according to Mark."
Your relationship with God should not end here.
