Mark: 14:12-25
The Lord's Supper 12 And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover? 13 And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. 14 And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? 15 And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us. 16 And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. 17 And in the evening he cometh with the twelve. 18 And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me. 19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? 20 And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. 21 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born. 22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. 23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it. 24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. 25 Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God. |
Margin notes:
"Unleavened bread." (14:12) - Unleavened bread, also call matzoth, is made without yeast so it will not rise. More of a hard flat cracker, it symbolizes the Israelite liberation from Egyptian bondage. "When they killed the passover." (14:12) - "When they killed the sacrificial Passover lamb." "He sendeth forth two of his disciples." (14:13) - The two disciples were Peter and John (Luke 22:8) "There shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water." (14:13) - Since fetching water was considered woman's work, this man would have stood out. "Goodman of the house." (14:14) - Means "Owner of the house." "Where is the guestchamber." (14:14) - "Where is the guest room." "One of you which eateth with me shall betray me." (14:18) - Jesus will be betrayed, as prophesied here and centuries earlier in Psalm 22:1-21, 41:9 and Isaiah 53:3-8. "Woe to that man." (14:21) - Proof that punishment awaits sinners. "Jesus took bread." (14:22) - Unleavened bread, roasted lamb, bitter herbs, and wine were the food and drink of Passover. Unleavened bread symbolized the Israelite liberation from Egyptian bondage while the bread of the Last Supper represents the body of Christ and mankind's liberation from sin. "He took the cup." (14:23) - At different points in the meal, four cups of wine, each representing one of God's promises to Israel (Exodus 6:6-7), were passed around the table so everyone could take a sip. "This is my blood of the new testament." (14:24) - "This is the blood of the new agreement (between God and mankind)." |

New Living Translation
Mark: 14:12-25
The Last Supper
12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus' disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go to prepare the Passover meal for you?"
13 So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these instructions: "As you go into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him.
14 At the house he enters, say to the owner, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?'
15 He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal."
16 So the two disciples went into the city and found everything just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal there.
17 In the evening Jesus arrived with the twelve disciples.
18 As they were at the table eating, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, one of you eating with me here will betray me."
19 Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, "Am I the one?"
20 He replied, "It is one of you twelve who is eating from this bowl with me.
21 For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!"
22 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, "Take it, for this is my body."
23 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24 And he said to them, "This is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice for many.
25 I tell you the truth, I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of God."

Answer: (Do you agree?)
1. To Christians, the blood of the New Testament means everything. The Old Covenant (agreement) between God and mankind required a never-ending series of blood sacrifices for sins to be forgiven (Exodus 24:4-8). That covenant was washed away forever with the blood of Jesus. When He died on the cross, Jesus became the last sacrifice needed. His sacrifice made Him "The lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). In place of the Old Covenant, we now have the New Covenant. This new agreement between God and mankind took effect the instant Jesus died on Calvary. Mankind's salvation is now possible by the grace of God and not by obeying the old Mosaic Law (Galatians 3:13).
Additional note: Jews celebrated their deliverance from Egyptian slavery (Passover) by sacrificing a lamb. Now, with Jesus' sacrifice, mankind is delivered from the slavery of sin. All we have to do is ask to be freed.
