John 15:1-17
A parable 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. 9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. 12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. 13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. 16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. 17 These things I command you, that ye love one another. Jesus gives a similar parable in Luke 13:6-9. |
Margin notes:
"I am the true vine." (15:1) - Jesus is proclaiming His deity. This is the seventh of seven times in John that Jesus declares Himself "I Am." The first was "I am the bread of life" (John 6:35) followed by "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12), "I am the door" (John 10:7), "I am the good shepherd" (John 10:11), "I am the resurrection" (John 11:25) and "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). Additional note: In the Old Testament, growing vines represented Israel and fruitfulness (Psalm 80:8-11; Isaiah 5:1-7; 27:2-6; Ezekiel 19:10-14. "My Father is the husbandman." (15:1) - "My Father is the gardener." "He purgeth it." (15:2) - "He prunes, trims it." "Now ye are clean through the word." (15:3) - Means cleansed or sanctified of sins through the word of God. See also John 17:17 and Ephesians 5:26. "Abide in me." (15:4) - To abide in Jesus is to believe in (1 John 4:15), obey (1 John 3:24), and live in union with Him. "He is cast forth as a branch." (15:6) - Means to be thrown into a fire as a useless branch. See also Matthew 3:10. Ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." (15:7) - Trust the power of prayer. Turn to God when in crisis or need of spiritual guidance. He will answer your prayers, but remember, even if God's answer isn't the one you were praying for, it will always be in your best interest. Jesus repeats this teaching in Matthew 7:7-8, Mark 11:24, John 14:13, and 16:24. "Herein is my father glorified." (15:8) - "By this my father is honored." "Continue ye in my love." (15:9) - "You remain in my love." "That your joy might be full." (15:11) - This message is reinforced in 1 John 1:4. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (15:13) - A reference to tomorrow's crucifixion and the deep love Jesus has for us. "I have made known unto you." (15:15) - "I have told you." "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you. (15:16) - "You didn't choose Me (to be sacrificed), but I chose you (to die for)." "Ordained you." (15:16) - Means, "assigned or appointed you." |
