John 10:22-42
Jewish leaders don't believe 22 And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. 24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. 25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. 26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and my Father are one. 31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? 33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. 34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? 35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken; 36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God? 37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. 38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him. 39 Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand, 40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode. 41 And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true. 42 And many believed on him there. |
Margin notes:
"Feast of the dedication." (10:22) - Usually called Hanukkah or the Feast of Lights. It is a Jewish holiday held each December to commemorate Syria's defeat in 164 BC and the cleansing and re-dedication of the Temple defiled by King Antiochus Epiphanes. "Solomon's porch." (10:23) - Solomon's porch was part of the Temple in Jerusalem. Built by King Herod, it was located in the Temple courtyard on the east side of the court of Gentiles. The porch was fifteen hundred feet long and ninety-five feet wide with a rich cedar roof (1 Kings 7:7) supported by magnificent stone columns. In Acts 3:11, a lame man followed Peter and John to Solomon's porch to thank them for the miracle that allowed him to walk. "Then came the Jews round about him." (10:24) - "Then the Jewish religious leaders surrounded Jesus." "How long dost thou make us to doubt." (10:24) - Means "how long will you keep us in suspense." "Tell us plainly." (10:24) - Not so they would believe, but so they could accuse Jesus of blasphemy. "Ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep." (10:26) - They didn't believe because they didn't hear. They didn't hear because they were not of God (John 8:47). "Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." (10:28) - Read John 6:37-39 and 17:12. "I and my Father are one." (10:30) - This is perhaps the most definitive statement in the Bible on Jesus' divinity. It leaves no room for doubt; Jesus is God. "Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him." (10:31) - This is not the first time they tried to stone Jesus (John 8:59). "Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?" (10:34) - It is written in Psalm 82:6. "The scripture cannot be broken." (10:35) - Because it is the holy word of God, scripture will last forever. "Sanctified." (10:36) - To be blessed, made holy, consecrated, atoned, cleansed of guilt, connected to the spiritual, and set apart for special use by God. Christians are sanctified, not because they are perfect but because of their relationship with Christ. "Blasphemest." (10:36) - Means to blasphemy. To blasphemy is to slander, insult (through words or actions), or speak irreverently of God, His authority, or grandeur. The Old testament named blasphemy as one of the worst sins, punishable by death (Leviticus 24:16). The New Testament calls blasphemy the unforgivable sin (Matthew 12:31-32; Mark 3:28-29; Luke 12:10). Unforgiveable because the sinner will not ask for forgiveness. Blasphemy isn't just a one-time mistake made in a time of spiritual uncertainty; it's an ongoing attitude of rebellion against God. "I am the Son of God." (10:36) - See Luke 1:35. "The Father is in me, and I in him." (10:38) - The Father and Son are one, a vital message that Jesus will repeat in verse 17:21. "They sought again to take him." (10:39) - "They tried again to arrest Him." "The place where John at first baptized." (10:40) - Jesus went to Bethabara (John 1:28), north of the Dead Sea. See map above. "Many resorted unto him." (10:41) - Means "Many came to Him." |
