In this lesson:
The Sermon on the Mount continues (every word in this passage is Jesus speaking). Don't judge your brother (7:1-5). Pray (7:7-11). The Golden Rule (7:12). Praise Jesus for his wisdom in giving us the teachings, principles, inspiration, and encouragement found in the Gospel of Matthew. Thank Jesus for what He reveals about Himself and ask Him to teach you how to know and love Him. Study Tip: Go into Bible work with an idea of what you want to get out of it. Make a list of what you're looking for in your studies. |

Matthew 7:1-12
Judging, giving, asking 1 Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. 6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. 7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? 12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. |
Margin notes:
"With what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again." (7:2) - This mean, "The yardstick you use to measure (others) is the yardstick that will be used to measure you." "Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" (7:3) - "Why do you see the splinter in your brother's eye but don't think about the log in your eye." "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine." (7:6) - "This means we should use common sense and tact in talking about our religion. Else we may do our cause more harm than good." (Halley's Bible Handbook" by Henry H. Halley, Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids, Michigan; page 434). "Turn again and rend you." (7:6) - "Turn and tear you apart." "Ask, and it shall be given you." (7:7) - Remember, when you find yourself in crisis or in need of spiritual guidance, turn to God in prayer. He promises to answer, and even if HIs response isn't what you expected, trust that it is always in your best interest. This teaching is reiterated by Jesus in Mark 11:24, John 14:13, 15:7 and 16:24. "If ye then, being evil." (7:11) - Mankind is wicked compared to God (Genesis 6:5), yet we still know what gifts our children need. How much more does God know our needs? "Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them." (7:12) - "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." This is "The Golden Rule" and is the basis for Christian goodness and mercy. Jesus expands on the Golden Rule in Luke 6:27-38. "This is the law." (7:12) - This is the Mosaic Law which Jews believed in and followed. The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus interpreting the Mosaic Law for His Jewish audience. |
Jesus teaches a similar message on judging in Luke 6:39-45.
New Living Translation
Matthew 7:1-12
Do Not Judge Others
1 "Do not judge others, and you will not be judged.
2 For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.
3 "And why worry about a speck in your friend's eye when you have a log in your own?
4 How can you think of saying to your friend, 'Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,' when you can't see past the log in your own eye?
5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend's eye.
6 "Don't waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don't throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.
Effective Prayer
7 "Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.
8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.
9 "You parents-if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead?
10 Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not!
11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.
The Golden Rule
12 "Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.

Answer: (Do you agree?)
1. In verse 7:1, Jesus discusses the Pharisees' habit of judging others. They judged as if they themselves were flawless. Judging others for their faults while we have our own flaws is prideful, arrogant, and foolish. Our shortcomings give us a distorted perspective and hinder our ability to see clearly (7:5). It's better for us to examine our own behavior and make the necessary improvements. However, Jesus does allow us to judge false prophets (Matthew 7:15-20) and distinguish between right and wrong. But we shouldn't presume to know the intentions of someone else's heart, as only God knows what lies hidden within a person. Due to our own hypocrisy, unfairness, self-righteousness, and imperfection, we make poor judges. Remember, we will all one day be judged by Jesus (1 Corinthians 4:3-5).
Application thought for the day:
All we need to do is ask God for mercy and salvation (Hebrews 4:16), and He will give it to us (7:7-11).
