Mark: 9:14-32
The disciples failed, Jesus didn't 14 And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them. 15 And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him. 16 And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them? 17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit; 18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. 19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. 22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. 23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. 25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. 26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose. 28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out? 29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. 30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it. 31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. 32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him. |
Margin notes:
"When he came to his disciples." (9:14) - "When Jesus (along with Peter, James, and John) returned to His disciples." They are returning from the mountain where Jesus was transfigured in lesson 80 (Mark 9:2-9). "Straightway." (9:15) - Means, "Immediately." "Running to him saluted him." (9:15) - "Ran to Jesus and greeted Him." "What question ye with them?" (9:16) - "What is your dispute with them." "A dumb spirit." (9:17) - This particular demon kept the boy from talking or hearing (9:25). "Wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him." (9:18) - "Whenever he (the demon) takes hold of him, the boy convulses." "Pineth away." (9:18) - "Goes rigid." "They could not." (9:18) - Remember, Jesus gave the disciples the power to heal and cast out demons in verses 3:14-15 (reading 68), which they did successfully in verse 6:13 (reading 73). "The spirit tare him." (9:20) - "The spirit convulsed him." "Ofttimes." (9:22) - "Many times." "If thou canst do any thing." (9:22) - "If you can do anything." "Rent him sore." (9:26) - "Convulsed him horribly." "This kind." (9:29) -Apparently, there are different kinds of demons, some stronger than others. Jesus seems to confirm this in Matthew 12:45. "They departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it." (9:30) - Jesus' time was growing short, so He went off with His disciples to teach them without the disruption of the crowds. This will be Jesus' last trip through Galilee. "The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men." (9:31) - For the second time since verse 8:31 (lesson 79), Jesus tells His disciples that He will be killed and resurrected. He wants them to understand. He will tell them again in verse 10:33-34. |

New Living Translation
Mark: 9:14-32
Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy
14 When they returned to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd surrounding them, and some teachers of religious law were arguing with them.
15 When the crowd saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with awe, and they ran to greet him.
16 "What is all this arguing about?" Jesus asked.
17 One of the men in the crowd spoke up and said, "Teacher, I brought my son so you could heal him. He is possessed by an evil spirit that won't let him talk.
18 And whenever this spirit seizes him, it throws him violently to the ground. Then he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast out the evil spirit, but they couldn't do it."
19 Jesus said to them, "You faithless people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to me."
20 So they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth.
21 "How long has this been happening?" Jesus asked the boy's father.
He replied, "Since he was a little boy.
22 The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can."
23 "What do you mean, 'If I can'?" Jesus asked. "Anything is possible if a person believes."
24 The father instantly cried out, "I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!"
25 When Jesus saw that the crowd of onlookers was growing, he rebuked the evil spirit. "Listen, you spirit that makes this boy unable to hear and speak," he said. "I command you to come out of this child and never enter him again!"
26 Then the spirit screamed and threw the boy into another violent convulsion and left him. The boy appeared to be dead. A murmur ran through the crowd as people said, "He's dead."
27 But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.
28 Afterward, when Jesus was alone in the house with his disciples, they asked him, "Why couldn't we cast out that evil spirit?"
29 Jesus replied, "This kind can be cast out only by prayer."
Jesus Again Predicts His Death
30 Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn't want anyone to know he was there,
31 for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead."
32 They didn't understand what he was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him what he meant.

Today's Question:
1. Why doesn't Jesus make "all things possible" for everyone? (9:23)
"You must pay for everything in this world one way and another. There is nothing free except the Grace of God. You cannot earn that or deserve it."
(Novelist Charles McColl Portis)

Answer: (Do you agree?)
1. Jesus doesn't make all things possible for everyone because not everyone has faith. For those who do, the impossible becomes possible (9:23). Jesus can do all things, but we must have faith to receive it. "Why are not our souls completely healed? Why is not every demon cast out? Why are not pride, self-will, love of the world, lust, anger, peevishness, with all the other bad tempers and dispositions which constitute the mind of Satan, entirely destroyed? Alas! it is because we do not believe; Jesus is able; more, Jesus is willing; but we are not willing to give up our idols; we give not credence to his word; therefore hath sin a being in us, and dominion over us."
(From Adam Clarke's Commentary. Adam Clarke (1762-1832) was a British theologian and Bible scholar. His verse-by-verse commentary of the Bible took forty years to research and write).
One of God's truths:
"All things are possible to him that believeth." (9:23)
