John 5:19-29
Jesus will judge 19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. 20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. 21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. 22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: 23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; 27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. 28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. |
Margin notes:
"Then answered Jesus and said unto them." (5:19) - Jesus is answering the Jewish leaders as the confrontation from lesson 173 continues (John 5:14-18). "The Son can do nothing of himself." (5:19) - Everything Jesus does is based on the will of God. Jesus repeats this message in verses 5:30, 8:38 and again in John 14:10. When Jesus repeats Himself it is a clue that it is important. "He will shew him greater works than these." (5:20) - "Greater works than these" means even more incredible miracles than the healing of the lame man in lesson 173 (John 5:2-9). "The Father raiseth up the dead." (5:21) - Although the Pharisees believed that God could raise the dead (1 Samuel 2:6), the Sadducees didn't. "And quickeneth them." (5:21) - "And gives them life." "For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son." (5:22) - Jesus, not God, will judge humanity. See also verse 5:27. "All men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father." (5:23) - Honor Jesus as you would God, because Jesus is God. "He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life." (5:24) - Means we are saved through faith. Jesus will reinforce this message again and again (John 6:37). "Is passed from death until life." (5:24) - Jesus came to give everlasting life to the spiritually dead. This is such an important message; the Bible repeats it in verses 3:18, 6:37, 6:40, 6:47, and again in 20:31. "The dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live." (5:25) - "The (spiritually) dead will hear Jesus' voice and those who listen will live." We are dead in sin until we hear the voice of God. "So hath he given to the Son to have life in himself." (5:26) - Jesus is the source of all life. "Hath given him authority to execute judgment." (5:27) - God has given Jesus the authority to judge us. "Marvel not at this." (5:28) - "Don't be surprised by this." "And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life." (5:29) - See Daniel 12:2. |
New Living Translation
John 5:19-29
19 So Jesus explained, "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.
20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished.
21 For just as the Father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone he wants.
22 In addition, the Father judges no one. Instead, he has given the Son absolute authority to judge,
23 so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son is certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.
24 "I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.
25 "And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it's here now, when the dead will hear my voice-the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.
26 The Father has life in himself, and he has granted that same life-giving power to his Son.
27 And he has given him authority to judge everyone because he is the Son of Man.
28 Don't be so surprised! Indeed, the time is coming when all the dead in their graves will hear the voice of God's Son,
29 and they will rise again. Those who have done good will rise to experience eternal life, and those who have continued in evil will rise to experience judgment.

Today's Question:
1. When does "everlasting life" begin? (5:24)
Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.
1. When does "everlasting life" begin? (5:24)
Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future.
Answer: (Do you agree?)
1. "Everlasting life - living forever with God - begins when you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior. At that moment, new life begins in you (2 Corinthians 5:17). It is a completed transaction. You still face physical death, but when Christ returns again, your body will be resurrected to live forever." (The "Life Application Study Bible" published by Tyndale House Publishing, Carol Stream Illinois; page 2057).
Eternal life begins when we accept Christ, not when we die (Ephesians 2:1, Colossians 2:13). There is nothing we can do to earn eternal life; it is a gift from God. All we need to do is trust in Jesus and accept His gift.

Those who live in sin live in death. (5:24)
