Luke 8:40-56
Lessons on the Word 40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him. 41 And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house: 42 For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him. 43 And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians*, neither could be healed of any, 44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. 45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace. 49 While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. 50 But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. 51 And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. 52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth. 53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. 54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise. 55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat. 56 And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done. *The part of verse 8:43 that appears in blue is not included in some of the original manuscripts. |
Margin notes:
"When Jesus was returned." (8:40) - Jesus returned from Gadara to Galilee (Luke 8:26). "Ruler of the synagogue." (8:41) - Jairus was the administrator in charge of the temple complex (probably in Capernaum) and its upkeep. "Issue of blood." (8:43) - The disease caused the woman to bleed continually. She was considered unclean and shunned by Jewish society (Leviticus 15:25-27). "Her issue of blood stanched." (8:44) - "Her bleeding stopped." "Virtue is gone out of me." (8:46) - "Power has gone out of me." This was not the first time this happened (Luke 6:19). "She was not hid." (8:47) - "She was discovered." "Fear not: believe only." (8:50) - The message here is to read the Bible, study it, believe, and grow in faith. "Save Peter, and James, and John." (8:51) - "Except Peter, James, and John." These three disciples were among the first to be called by Jesus (Mark 1:14-19) and made up His inner circle. They were the only disciples allowed to witness the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9; Mark 9:1-13; Luke 9:28-36), the resurrection of Jairus' daughter, and Jesus praying in Gethsemane Garden as He waited to be arrested (Matthew 26:36-37; Mark 14:32-33). "She arose straightway." (8:55) - "She rose immediately." "He charged them." (8:56) - "He cautioned them." |

Luke 8:40-56
Jesus Heals in Response to Faith
40 On the other side of the lake the crowds welcomed Jesus, because they had been waiting for him.
41 Then a man named Jairus, a leader of the local synagogue, came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with him to come home with him.
42 His only daughter, who was about twelve years old, was dying.
As Jesus went with him, he was surrounded by the crowds.
43 A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding, and she could find no cure.
44 Coming up behind Jesus, she touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately, the bleeding stopped.
45 "Who touched me?" Jesus asked.
Everyone denied it, and Peter said, "Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you."
46 But Jesus said, "Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me."
47 When the woman realized that she could not stay hidden, she began to tremble and fell to her knees in front of him. The whole crowd heard her explain why she had touched him and that she had been immediately healed.
48 "Daughter," he said to her, "your faith has made you well. Go in peace."
49 While he was still speaking to her, a messenger arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. He told him, "Your daughter is dead. There's no use troubling the Teacher now."
50 But when Jesus heard what had happened, he said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid. Just have faith, and she will be healed."
51 When they arrived at the house, Jesus wouldn't let anyone go in with him except Peter, John, James, and the little girl's father and mother.
52 The house was filled with people weeping and wailing, but he said, "Stop the weeping! She isn't dead; she's only asleep."
53 But the crowd laughed at him because they all knew she had died.
54 Then Jesus took her by the hand and said in a loud voice, "My child, get up!"
55 And at that moment her life returned, and she immediately stood up! Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.
56 Her parents were overwhelmed, but Jesus insisted that they not tell anyone what had happened.

Today's Question:
1. Could a person be healed just by touching Jesus' clothes? (8:44)
Make God a part of your life by studying His word each day. Your Bible has more to teach than these lessons can cover.

Answer: (Do you agree?)
1. No, they couldn't. The woman wasn't healed because she touched Jesus' clothes. She was healed because of her faith (8:48).
Of all the people, who purposely or in the crush of the crowd accidentally touched Jesus that day, she was the only one healed.
Additional note: It's interesting to see how Jesus treated the bleeding woman. Jewish society considered her unclean and anyone who touched or was touched by her was defiled. Still, Jesus didn't hesitate to make it known that she had touched Him, and instead of condemning her, He healed her.
