John 21:1-14
Breakfast on the beach 1 After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. 2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. 3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. 6 And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. 8 And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. 9 As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. 10 Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. 11 Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. 12 Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. 14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. |
Margin notes:
"Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples." (21:1) - In forty days, the resurrected Christ made eleven separate appearances to the disciples and hundreds of other witnesses (see list below). Years later, Jesus appeared to Paul (Acts 9:3-6). "The Sea of Tiberias." (21:1) - "The Sea of Galilee" (John 6:1). Per Jesus' instructions (Matthew 28:7; 28:10; Mark 16:7), the disciples went to Galilee to meet Jesus. "And on this wise shewed he himself." (21:1) - "And this is the way He showed Himself." "The sons of Zebedee." (21:2) - They are James and John, the author of this Gospel. "I go a fishing." (21:3) - Despite seeing and talking to the resurrected Christ, the disciples went back to their old profession, fishing. Jesus had to call them again. Once you have accepted the Lord, don't go back to your old ways and make Jesus call you again. "Have ye any meat?" (21:5) - "Have you any fish." In Jesus' day, people used the word meat to describe most foods. "That disciple whom Jesus loved." (21:7) - Refers to John, the author of this Gospel. "He girt his fisher's coat unto him." (21:7) - Means, "He wrapped his fisherman's coat around himself." "Cast himself into the sea." (21:7) - The excited Peter jumped out of the boat and swam to Jesus. "Two hundred cubits." (21:8) - Approximately three hundred feet. "Simon Peter went up." (21:11) - "Simon Peter went aboard (the boat)." "Durst ask him." (21:12) - "Dared to ask him." "This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples." (21:14) - Jesus first appeared to the disciples as they hid behind locked doors (John 20:19). The second visit came eight days later after Thomas had joined the group (John 20:26). Since Mary Magdalene, the women, the travelers on the road to Emmaus, and Peter had also seen Jesus, this was His seventh overall appearance. |
