The Gospel According to St. Luke
The King James Bible
Luke 12:13-34
A parable 13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. 14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? 15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. 16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17 And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. 22 And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. 23 The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. 24 Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? 25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? 26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? 27 Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? 29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. 30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. 31 But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. 32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. 34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. |
Margin notes:
"One of the company said." (12:13) - Means, "someone in the crowd said." "Speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me." (12:13) - "Tell my brother to divide our inheritance with me." Although Deuteronomy 21:17 called for the oldest son to receive a larger inheritance than his siblings, disputes often resulted, and rabbis asked to intervene. "Who made me a judge or a divider." (12:14) - "Who made me a mediator." Jesus will someday judge mankind (John 5:22), but He will not mediate disputes over money. "Beware of covetousness." (12:15) - "Beware of greed." Psalm 62:10; 1 Timothy 6:9-10; James 5:1-5. "He thought within himself." (12:17) - "He thought to himself." "Bestow my fruits." (12:17) -"Store my crops." "Then whose shall those things be." (12:20) - See Psalm 39:6. "He that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." (12:21) - Anyone who builds a fortune on earth and not in heaven has made a foolish choice. "Life is more than meat." (12:23) - "Life is more than food." "Raiment." (12:23) - "Clothes." "Add to his stature." (12:25) - "Add to his life." "Neither be ye of doubtful mind." (12:29) - "Don't be anxious." "Fear not, little flock." (12:32) - See also Deuteronomy 31:8 and 2 Timothy 1:7. "Provide yourselves bags which wax not old." (12:33) - "Give yourself purses which never gold old." "There will your heart be." (12:34) - Where you put your money shows where your heart is. |
You can reinforce Jesus' message on worrying by reading Matthew 6:25-33 (lesson 11).
New Living Translation
Luke 12:13-34
Parable of the Rich Fool
13 Then someone called from the crowd, "Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father's estate with me."
14 Jesus replied, "Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?"
15 Then he said, "Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own."
16 Then he told them a story: "A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops.
17 He said to himself, 'What should I do? I don't have room for all my crops.'
18 Then he said, 'I know! I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I'll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods.
19 And I'll sit back and say to myself, "My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!"'
20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?'
21 "Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God."
Teaching about Money and Possessions
22 Then, turning to his disciples, Jesus said, "That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life-whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear.
23 For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing.
24 Look at the ravens. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any birds!
25 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
26 And if worry can't accomplish a little thing like that, what's the use of worrying over bigger things?
27 "Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.
28 And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?
29 "And don't be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don't worry about such things.
30 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs.
31 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.
32 "So don't be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom.
33 "Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it.
34 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
This second Bible text from the "New Living Translation" (Tyndale House, Publishers, Wheaton, Illinois) is a paraphrase and not an accurate word for word translation of the Bible. However, it is a helpful tool when read with the "King James Version."
Today's question:

Answer: (Do you agree?)
1. No, Jesus is not suggesting that we impoverish ourselves. But, He is asking Christians to adopt a different attitude than the rest of the world. A well-lived life has nothing to do with the accumulation of material wealth. If we're not careful, money becomes a snare that cuts us off from God. Christians should be thankful for what they have and concentrate on building a relationship with God. As we see in this parable, we can't take it with us. The night the rich man decided to "eat, drink, and be merry" (12:19) was the very night he died (12: 20). Build your treasure in heaven; it is the only wealth that matters, or lasts.
Additional note; Using money wisely means using it for God's purposes, not indulging in fleeting earthly pleasures. Providing for family is necessary; planning a stable financial future is smart; forgetting to prepare for eternity is tragic.
Application thought for the day:
God wants us to succeed in our quest for the Kingdom of heaven; it brings Him great joy (12:32). Tell God that you wish to live with Him forever in eternal bliss, and pray for Him to come into your life. God never turns away a sincere heart.
