Lesson 483

Read both the "King James Bible" and the "New Living Translation."

In this lesson:

The seventh and final trumpet announces the third woe (11:15).
(The third woe, the final judgment, begins in Revelation 16:1-21).

God's heavenly Temple is opened (11:19).

"The Temple of God was opened in heaven." (11:19)

Remember -
The first woe unleashed stinging locusts to torment mankind (9:1-12).
The second woe killed a third of the world's population (9:14-16).

The way to salvation -

First, acknowledge that we are all sinners and that the penalty for sin is eternal punishment.
Second, repent and trust Jesus Christ who died for our sins and was resurrected.
Lastly, pray and make Jesus a part of your life.

Forgiveness of sins and salvation comes through the Son of God.

The temple of God

14 The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.

15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,

17 Saying, We give thee thanks, O LORD God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.

18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Margin notes:

"The third woe." (11:14) - The third woe brings the final judgment.

"The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ." (11:15) - God and Jesus will one day rule the world (Zechariah 14:9).

"The seventh angel sounded." (11:15) - Remember, in lesson 481, the seventh angel starts the events that will complete God's plan (Revelation 10:7; 16:17). See "Today's Question" below.

"He shall reign for ever and ever." (11:15) - As prophesized in Daniel 7:14 and Luke 1:31-33.

"The four and twenty elders." (11:16) - We met the 24 elders in verse 4:4 (lesson 474).

"Sat before God on their seats." (11:16) - "Sat before God on their thrones."

"The saints." (11:18) - "The believers."

"The ark of his testament." (11:19) - Also called the "Ark of the Covenant," "Chest of the Covenant," or the "Ark of the Testimony" (Exodus 26:33; 30:6; 30:26; 31:7). The Ark was a wooden chest 3 3/4 feet long, 2 1/4 feet wide, 2 1/4 feet high made of wood and covered with gold (Exodus 25:10-16). It represented the presence of God and carried Jewish religious treasures such as the Ten Commandments (Deuteronomy 31:26), Aaron's wooden rod (Numbers 17:8-10), and a golden pot of manna (Exodus 16:32-34). Atop the chest was the Mercy Seat, made of solid gold. The Ark was kept in the Most Holy Place in the Temple (2 Chronicles 5:7; Hebrews 9:3-4), where only a High Priest descended from Aaron could enter. The Ark disappeared when the Babylonians conquered, looted, and destroyed Jerusalem.

Revelation 11:14-19

14 The second terror is past, but look, the third terror is coming quickly.

The Seventh Trumpet Brings the Third Terror

15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices shouting in heaven:

  "The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ,
      and he will reign forever and ever."

16 The twenty-four elders sitting on their thrones before God fell with their faces to the ground and worshiped him.

17 And they said,

  "We give thanks to you, Lord God, the Almighty,
      the one who is and who always was,
   for now you have assumed your great power
      and have begun to reign.

18 The nations were filled with wrath,
      but now the time of your wrath has come.
   It is time to judge the dead
      and reward your servants the prophets,
      as well as your holy people,
   and all who fear your name,
      from the least to the greatest.
   It is time to destroy
      all who have caused destruction on the earth."

19 Then, in heaven, the Temple of God was opened and the Ark of his covenant could be seen inside the Temple. Lightning flashed, thunder crashed and roared, and there was an earthquake and a terrible hailstorm.

This second Bible text from the "New Living Translation" (Tyndale House, Publishers, Wheaton, Illinois) is a paraphrase and not an accurate word-for-word translation of the Bible. However, it is a helpful tool when read with the "King James Version."

Today's question:

1. What happens when the seventh angel blows their trumpet? (11:15)

These lessons are not meant to convert unbelievers. Their purpose is to introduce people to Jesus, so He can work on their hearts and minds.

1. The King will arrive when the seventh angel blows their trumpet. "There is now no turning back. The coming judgments are no longer partial, but complete in their destruction. God is in control, and he unleashes his full wrath upon the evil world that refuses to turn to him (9:20-21). When his wrath begins, there will be no escape."
