John 16:5-24
"Ye shall receive." 5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? 6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. 17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? 18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. 19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. 21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. 22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. 23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. 24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. |
Margin notes:
"None of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?" (16:5) - "Not one of you asked me where I'm going." It is expedient for you that I go away." (16:7) - Means, "It is better for you (mankind) that I go away (be sacrificed on the cross)." "If I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you." (16:7) - Jesus must be crucified for the Holy Spirit to come and our sins to be forgiven. "And when he is come." (16:8) - The Holy Spirit came to the disciples on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-12). His mission, to "dwell" within the disciples (14:17), "teach" them the truth (14:26; 16:13), show them the "things to come" (6:13) and to "glorify" Christ (16:14). "He will reprove the world of sin." (16:8) - "He will convict the world of sin." "Of sin, because they believe not on me." (16:9) - "The sin of not believing in Me." "Righteousness, because I go to my Father." (16:10) - We found righteousness when Jesus was put to death for our sins (1 Peter 3:18). "The prince of this world is judged." (16:11) - "Satan has already been judged." "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now." (16:12) - "I have many things to tell you, but you wouldn't understand them now." It won't be until after the resurrection that things will be made clear to the disciples. "Howbeit." (16:13) - Means, "however." "The Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth....." (16:13) - The Holy Spirit dwells within believers to teach and guide them (John 14:17; 14:26). "All things that the Father hath are mine." (16:15) - God has given "all things" to Jesus (Luke 10:22; John 3:35). "A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me." (16:16) - Jesus is referring to His death and resurrection. "We cannot tell what he saith." (16:18) - "We don't understand what He said." "Verily." (16:20) - "Truly." "The world shall rejoice." (16:20) - Evil celebrated the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. "But your sorrow shall be turned into joy." (16:20) - When the disciples see that Jesus is resurrected. "A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow." (16:21) - "A woman in labor suffers pain." "Joy that a man is born." (16:21) - "Joy that a baby is born." "Hitherto." (16:24) - "Until now." "Ask, and ye shall receive." (16:24) - Trust the power of prayer. Turn to God when in crisis or need of spiritual guidance. He will answer your prayers. But remember, even if God's answer isn't the one you for praying for, it will always be in your best interest. Jesus repeatedly told His followers to "ask" (Matthew 7:7-8; Mark 11:24; John 14:13; 15:7. "Your joy may be full." (16:24) - Jesus is repeating this for emphasis from John 15:11.
