Lesson 5
Matthew 4:1-11
Jesus' wilderness temptations 1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. |
Margin notes:
"Tempted of the devil." (4:1) - "Tested by the devil." "He was afterward an hungred." (4:2) - "Afterward, He was hungry." "When the tempter came to him." (4:3) - "When Satan came to Him (Jesus)." Just as Satan led Adam and Eve astray in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1-6), he now tries to confound Jesus. Because Adam succumbed to Satan, mankind lost paradise (Genesis 3:23) and a relationship with God. Now, Satan tries to repeat his success with Adam and seduce Jesus. Had Satan succeeded, mankind would have remained estranged from God. But Jesus ("The last Adam") won, whereas "The first Adam" (1 Corinthians 15:45) lost. See "Today's Questions" below. "If thou be the son of God." (4:3) - "Since you are the Son of God." The word "if," as used here, is conditional, meaning "since." Satan knows full well who Jesus is. "It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone." (4:4) - This quote can be found in Deuteronomy 8:3. It is part of the Mosaic Law, meant to teach and encourage the Israelites as they were being tested in the wilderness. "Lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone." (4:6) - Satan knows Scripture, here he quotes Psalms 91:11-12. Notice how Satan uses this passage about "trusting" God and twists it to justify "testing" God. "It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." (4:7) - "It is written again; you will not test the Lord." This is paraphrased from Deuteronomy 6:16. "Get thee hence, Satan." (4:10) - "Begone, Satan." "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." (4:10) - Paraphrased from Exodus 23:25, Deuteronomy 6:13 and 10:20. "Then the devil leaveth him." (4:11) - Satan will flee if we resist him and submit to God (James 4:7). |
