In this lesson:
Jesus is betrayed, arrested, denied, mocked, beaten, tried, and condemned by the High Council. The time of salvation is near. Study Tip: We tend to read as if we're in a race. But when you read the Bible, take the time to meditate on each passage. Allow the true meaning of God's word to enter you. |

Luke 22:47-71
Arrested 47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. 48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? 49 When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? 50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. 51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? 53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. 54 Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. 57 And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. 58 And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. 59 And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean. 60 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. 61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. 62 And Peter went out, and wept bitterly. 63 And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. 64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? 65 And many other things blasphemously spake they against him. 66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, 67 Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: 68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. 70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth. |
Margin notes:
"A multitude." (22:47) - The crowd that came to arrest Jesus was made up of well-armed Roman soldiers, Temple guards, chief priests, scribes, Jewish elders, and their servants (Matthew 26:47; Mark 14:43; Luke 22:50; 52; and John 18:3). "Drew near unto Jesus to kiss him." (22:47) - It was agreed beforehand that Judas would identify Jesus to the mob by kissing Him (Matthew 26:48). Still today, eastern men greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. "Shall we smite with the sword." (22:49) - Remember, Jesus' group had two swords (Luke 22:38). "One of them smote the servant of the high priest." (22:50) - It was Peter who "smote" the servant. His name was Malchus (John 18:10). "Suffer ye thus far." (22:51) - Means "enough of this." "He touched his ear, and healed him." (22:51) - Despite this miracle, the mob still arrested Jesus. "Staves." (22:52) - "Clubs." "I was daily with you in the temple." (22:53) - See Luke 19:47. "Brought him into the high priest's house." (22:54) - The High Priest's name was Caiaphas. "A fire in the midst of the hall." (22:55) - "A fire in the middle of the courtyard." "A certain maid." (22:56) - The maid was one of Annas' (the former Chief Priest of the Sanhedrin) servants. "Confidently affirmed." (22:59) - Means "Confidently insisted." "He is a Galilean." (22:59) - Peter's distinct Galilean accent was easy to detect (Matthew 26:73). "And smote him." (22:63) - "And hit Him." "As soon as it was day." (22:66) - It is now Friday morning. The chief priests had already decided to put Jesus to death, but according to Jewish law, a man on trial for his life could not be sentenced at night. The priests were ready to condemn an innocent man but not willing to violate this minor law. "Their council." (22:66) - This refers to the Sanhedrin, which was made up of seventy Pharisee and Sadducees. However, not all were in attendance this day. "Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God." (22:69) - Jesus will sit at the right hand of God, the seat representing honor and power, as prophesied in Psalm 110:1 fourteen hundred years earlier and seen by Stephen, the first Christian martyr, in a vision (Acts 7:54-56). |
New Living Translation
Luke 22:47-71
Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested
47 But even as Jesus said this, a crowd approached, led by Judas, one of the twelve disciples. Judas walked over to Jesus to greet him with a kiss.
48 But Jesus said, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"
49 When the other disciples saw what was about to happen, they exclaimed, "Lord, should we fight? We brought the swords!" 50 And one of them struck at the high priest's slave, slashing off his right ear.
51 But Jesus said, "No more of this." And he touched the man's ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus spoke to the leading priests, the captains of the Temple guard, and the elders who had come for him. "Am I some dangerous revolutionary," he asked, "that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me?
53 Why didn't you arrest me in the Temple? I was there every day. But this is your moment, the time when the power of darkness reigns."
Peter Denies Jesus
54 So they arrested him and led him to the high priest's home. And Peter followed at a distance.
55 The guards lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there.
56 A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, "This man was one of Jesus' followers!"
57 But Peter denied it. "Woman," he said, "I don't even know him!"
58 After a while someone else looked at him and said, "You must be one of them!"
"No, man, I'm not!" Peter retorted.
59 About an hour later someone else insisted, "This must be one of them, because he is a Galilean, too."
60 But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about." And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
61 At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord's words flashed through Peter's mind: "Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me."
62 And Peter left the courtyard, weeping bitterly.
63 The guards in charge of Jesus began mocking and beating him.
64 They blindfolded him and said, "Prophesy to us! Who hit you that time?"
65 And they hurled all sorts of terrible insults at him.
Jesus before the Council
66 At daybreak all the elders of the people assembled, including the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. Jesus was led before this high council,
67 and they said, "Tell us, are you the Messiah?"
But he replied, "If I tell you, you won't believe me. 68 And if I ask you a question, you won't answer.
69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated in the place of power at God's right hand."
70 They all shouted, "So, are you claiming to be the Son of God?"
And he replied, "You say that I am."
71 "Why do we need other witnesses?" they said. "We ourselves heard him say it."

Answer: (Do you agree?)
1. "Ye say that I am" is similar to the phase God used to describe Himself to Moses, "I am that I am" (Exodus 3:14). The Jewish council was well aware of this Old Testament passage and knew that by repeating it, Jesus was proclaiming Himself God, the great "I am." To the Sanhedrin, this was the ultimate blasphemy and punishable by death (Leviticus 24:16).
Application thought for the day:
"Go to no place today where you would not like to be found when Jesus comes."
