The Gospel According to St. Luke
The King James Bible
Luke 22:24-46
Agony in the garden 24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. 25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. 28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. 29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; 30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. 33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. 34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. 35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. 36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough. 39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. 40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. 41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, 42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. 43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. |
Margin notes:
"Which of them should be accounted the greatest." (22:24) - "Which of them should be considered the greatest." "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them." (22:25) - "The kings (and civil leaders, politicians, etc.) lord it over them." Jesus is about to reinforce His teaching on humility from Mark 10:42-45. "He that is chief, as he doth serve." (22:26) - "He that is chief is the one that serves." Jesus taught this same lesson in Matthew 20:25-27 and 23:11. "Whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth." (22:27) - "Who is greater, the one who sits at dinner, or the one that serves." "I am among you as he that serveth." (22:27) - Jesus came to serve, not to be served (Matthew 20:28). "My temptations." (22:28) - "My trials." Jesus' ministry was full of them. "Ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel." (22:30) - Jesus is repeating this message from Matthew 19:28. "Satan hath desired to have you." (22:31) - "Satan has asked to have you." Satan is always looking for victims (1 Peter 5:8). He asked God if he could have Job in Job 2:1-6. "Scrip." (22:35) - "Money." "This that is written must yet be accomplished." (22:37) - Jesus is referring to the prophecy of His arrest written seven hundred years earlier in Isaiah 53:12. "He was reckoned among the transgressors." (22:37) - "He will be considered a criminal." "As he was wont." (22:39) - "As he was accustomed." "The place." (22:40) - The place was an olive orchard called Gethsemane Garden located at the foot of the western slope of the Mount of Olives near Cedron Brook (John 18:1), two miles east of Jerusalem. Jesus and His disciples stayed there often (John 18:2). "About a stone's cast." (22:41) - "About a stone's throw." "Cup." (22:42) - Beginning with the Old Testament, "the cup" represented God's wrath at sin (Psalm 75:8; Isaiah 51:17; Jeremiah 25:15-28). "Not my will, but thine, be done." (22:42) - Beautiful, submissive words to remember when we pray. "Sweat was as it were great drops of blood." (22:44) - Jesus' anguish caused Him to sweat blood. This condition is "known as hematidrosis, the effusion of blood in one's perspiration" ("The MacArthur Bible Commentary" by John MacArthur published by Thomas Nelson, Nashville, Tennessee; page 1327). It occurs when the body is under extreme stress, causing the capillaries near the skin surface to dilate and rupture, mixing blood with sweat. "Sleeping for sorrow." (22:45) - "Exhausted from their sorrow." |
You can read two more accounts of Jesus predicting Peter's denial in Matthew 26:33-35 (lesson 55) and Mark 14:29-31 (lesson 95).
New Living Translation
Luke 22:24-46
24 Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them.
25 Jesus told them, "In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people, yet they are called 'friends of the people.'
26 But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant.
27 Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who serves.
28 "You have stayed with me in my time of trial.
29 And just as my Father has granted me a Kingdom, I now grant you the right
30 to eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom. And you will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial
31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat.
32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers."
33 Peter said, "Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you."
34 But Jesus said, "Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me."
35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you out to preach the Good News and you did not have money, a traveler's bag, or extra clothing, did you need anything?"
"No," they replied.
36 "But now," he said, "take your money and a traveler's bag. And if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one!
37 For the time has come for this prophecy about me to be fulfilled: 'He was counted among the rebels.' Yes, everything written about me by the prophets will come true."
38 "Look, Lord," they replied, "we have two swords among us."
"That's enough," he said.
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
39 Then, accompanied by the disciples, Jesus left the upstairs room and went as usual to the Mount of Olives.
40 There he told them, "Pray that you will not give in to temptation."
41 He walked away, about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed,
42 "Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine."
43 Then an angel from heaven appeared and strengthened him.
44 He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.
45 At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief.
46 "Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation."
This second Bible text from the "New Living Translation" (Tyndale House, Publishers, Wheaton, Illinois) is a paraphrase and not an accurate word for word translation of the Bible. However, it is a helpful tool when read with the "King James Version."

Answer: (Do you agree?)
1. Jesus told His disciples to pray because He knew their faith would be challenged after He is crucified. They believed that Jesus is the Messiah, but would they still believe when He is nailed to the cross like a common criminal? Or will they think that the Pharisees had been right all along? Immediately after Christ's arrest, His followers abandoned Him (Matthew 26:56; Mark 14:50). Would they be tempted to flee Jerusalem before the Messiah is even resurrected? And if they stay, would they have enough faith to endure the persecution they will face while building God's church? Jesus' work was almost done, theirs was just beginning, and they would need continual prayer to sustain them.
Application thought for the day:
"Do nothing today that you would not like to be doing when Jesus comes."
