Mankind has a natural predisposition to sin. Since Adam and Eve, sinfulness has been a habitual part of human behavior. Who among us can say they have never fallen? To sin is to rebel against God and it alienates us from our creator. Sin takes many forms, and all of them are an offense to God. It is any thought or action that falls short of God's standards.
Jesus came to earth to take the punishment for our iniquities and to reconcile us with God. Thanks to His sacrifice on the cross, we have hope. Our misdeeds, whether large or small, are forgiven when we accept Christ. It's like they never happened.
"Sin is -
1) transgression, an overstepping of the law, the divine boundary between good and evil (Psalm 51:1; Romans 2:23);
2) iniquity, an act inherently wrong, whether expressly forbidden or not (Romans 1:21-23);
3) error, a departure from right (Romans 1:18; 1 John 3:4);
4) missing the mark, a failure to meet the divine standard (Romans 3:23);
5) trespass, the intrusion of self-will into the sphere of divine authority (Ephesians 2:1);
6) lawlessness, or spiritual anarchy (1 Timothy 1:9);
7) unbelief, or an insult to the divine veracity (John 16:9).
Sin -
1) originated with Satan (Isaiah 14:12-14);
2) entered the world through Adam (Romans 5:12);
3) was, and is, universal, Christ alone excepted (Romans 3:23; 1 Peter 2:22);
4) incurs the penalties of spiritual and physical death (Genesis 2:17; 3:19; Ezekiel 18:4; 18:20; Romans 6:23); and
5) has no remedy but in the sacrificial death of Christ (Acts 4:12; Hebrews 9:26) availed of by faith (Acts 13:38-39).
Sin may be summarized as threefold -
1) an act, the violation of, or want of obedience to, the revealed will of God;
2) a state, absence of righteousness; and
3) a nature, enmity toward God."
