In this lesson:
Words of encouragement. (10:40-42) This concludes the segment on Jesus teaching His disciples, which began in lesson 19. Study Tip: Use the investigative journalist's five W's approach as you study the Bible. As you read each passage, ask yourself who, what, when, where, and why. |

Matthew 10:34-42
Final instructions 34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. 40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. 41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. 42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. Matthew: Chapter 11:1 Jesus departs 1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. |
Margin notes:
"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth." (10:34) - "Don't think that I came to bring peace on earth." We will not see world peace until the millennium. See "Today's Question" one below. "I am come to set a man at variance against his father..." (10:35) - Christians will face persecution from unbelievers and even their own family, as prophesized in Micah 7:6. See also Luke 12:53. A man's foes shall be they of his own household." (10:36) - Jesus is paraphrasing the prophecy in Micah 7:6. "He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it." (10:39) - Jesus will reinforce this lesson in Matthew 16:25; Mark 8:35; Luke 9:24; 17:33; and John 12:25. "He that receiveth you receiveth me." (10:40) - Jesus lives inside believers, so the way you treat a Christian is the way you treat the Messiah. Jesus makes a similar point in Matthew 25:45, Luke 9:48, and John 12:44. "Whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones." (10:42) - "Whoever gives a drink to a Christian." Jesus frequently refers to Christians as children (Matthew 18:3). See also Mark 9:41. "In the name of a disciple." (10:42) - Means "because he is a disciple." "He shall in no wise lose his reward." (10:42) - "He shall in no way lose his reward." "When Jesus had made an end of commanding." (11:1) - "When Jesus finished teaching." |
New Living Translation
Matthew 10:34-11:1
34 "Don't imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.
35 'I have come to set a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
36 Your enemies will be right in your own household!'
37 "If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.
38 If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.
39 If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.
40 "Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me.
41 If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God, you will be given the same reward as a prophet. And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs.
42 And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded."
Matthew 11:1
1 When Jesus had finished giving these instructions to his twelve disciples, he went out to teach and preach in towns throughout the region.

Answers: (Do you agree?)
1. According to the "Quest Study Bible" (Published by The Zondervan Corporation, Grand Rapids, Michigan; pg. 1399), "the peace Jesus brings is the result of people being "made right" with God. It is a peace that resolves all barriers between one's soul and one's creator." Not everyone will accept Christ and come to know this peace. Those who don't will eventually experience God's judgment (the sword). Conflict will exist on earth until the day Jesus returns.
2. No, Jesus does not want to divide families. Some people will accept Christ, but many won't. Jesus is warning us that this will strain relationships and separate families. He is strengthening our families by letting us know what to expect from those who don't believe. Family is essential and should never be disregarded, but it shouldn't keep believers from serving God.
Application thought for the day:
Are you giving God the commitment He's looking for (10:37-39)?
